If you missed the 2008 Salt Lake City, Utah ALPCA convention, but ever decide to come through Utah, listed below are several fun and inexpensive or free things to do in Utah:

1.  Go float in the Great Salt Lake.  It's 5 times saltier than the ocean and it's nearly impossible to drown since you float so easily.
2.  Go up Big Cottonwood Canyon (at 7000 South Street in Salt Lake City) and go past Solitude and Brighton ski resorts and over Guardsman Pass (at nearly 11,000 feet) and the scenary and view is fantastic.  It's as close to Switzerland as it gets around here.  You can continue on over the pass and down into Park City.  Most of the road is paved and the rest is easily traveled by car.
3.  Go to the Bingham Copper Mine - largest open pit mine in the world, at nearly 1 mile deep and 5 miles wide.  You can even mine if you want in a dumpload they've put near the visitors center.
4.  Go visit Park City and it's eclectic atmosphere.  Good place to eat and drink a beer.
5.  Go visit the Hill Air Force Base aircraft museum.  It's one of the best I've seen, and it's free.  HAFB is about 20 miles north of Salt Lake.  It has planes starting from 1911 (old Wright Brother type plane), and has a SR-71, B-1 Bomber, and hundreds of other aircraft, with most of them housed inside air conditioned hangers.  Also great for kids with flight simulators and other learning activities that are also free.
6.  Go see the Golden Spike National Monument.  This is where the transcontinental railroad met in 1869, with the Central Railroad coming from California and the Union Pacific coming from Omaha.  It's 80 miles north of Salt Lake City (go to Brigham City and then west 30 miles).
7.  Go see one, two, or more of the 5 National Parks in Utah (Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef).  Zion has 3000 feet of vertical majestic granite mountains with slot canyons in between.  Bryce has thousands of sandstone pinacles carved over millions of year by wind and rain.  Arches has hundreds of sandstone arches, including the famous one on the license plate.  Canyonlands has majestic views, particularly from Dead Horse Point, of the Colorado River as it winds it way like a snake through color canyons.  And Capital Reef is just plain nice.
8.  Go see the Bonneville Salt Flats where world speed records have been set in the near perfectly level old Lake Bonneville lake bed.
9.  Go to a Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert on Thursday night (free) or on Sunday morning (free), and enjoy the peacefulness of Temple Square.
